Once you cross the river, and turn south towards Ivarstead, beware of the troll under the overhang on your left.

There's a Wisp Mother just above (south) of the building that frequently aggros if you're walking along the road normally.

When you see the burnt out building on the right side of the road, IMMEDIATELY go into sneak mode and up onto the hill on the LEFT to bypass it and continue on towards the river.

Except for two issues that make it perhaps the most dangerous route. And it's a very quick (if it takes even a quarter of the time that the Helgen route does, I'd be surprised) and safe road. The path becomes a road fairly quickly once you get up into the mountains. It's between the giant camp (to your left as you come from the Ritual Stone) and the Whiterun Stormcloak Camp (the only one without a Quartermaster, which always pisses me off :/).
